Dear Workshop Parents,

As I said at our first meeting, change is a very big part of every theater.  In SKIT, we very often make changes to better suit the needs of each group of children.  After Saturday’s rehearsal, I had an idea of a program that would work better for this particular group of children than a musical revue.  I think they would get more training out of a program which involves what we really do:  a short musical show.  This would allow them to really get a true taste of all aspects of musical theater.

The show I thought would best match the needs and talents of this particular group (each group has its own unique attributes!) is “Disney Kids’ Cinderella.”   We recently performed this musical (with great success!).  It would be a wonderful introduction into the world of musical theater!  There are over 20 speaking parts, plus chorus roles.  There are roles for males and females, young children and older ones.

The show last approximately 30 – 40 minutes.  We would have full costumes, small sets with the “star curtain” backdrop and many props.  Each child would receive a full script and rehearsal CD.  We would do one performance for relatives and friends at Voorhees High School.

The performance date would have to be extended somewhat as I feel it would take a little longer to work on a full show.  Therefore, I feel it would be best to perform this in January 2009.  This would not interfere with anyone asked to join Pre-SKIT, since we really do not begin working on the next Pre-SKIT show until January.

I prefer not to audition new children because of the undue stress it puts on them (and their parents!).  Therefore, I would put the children in the best parts for them.  I have had 22 years of experience putting children in parts, and usually do not really need to audition them.  In Pre-SKIT and SKIT we do audition for the roles to train the children in the auditioning process.

If anyone feels that this change to the program would not be good for your child, we understand. Feel free to e-mail me and we will refund your tuition.

A note to new parents:  Please do your child a big favor and be a supportive theater parent and not a “Stage Parent”! Help your child understand that they are new to theater and there are many years to get parts.  Therefore, encourage them not to get their hearts set on a specific role, but rather accept the director’s decision on what would be the best role for them at this time.

The next rehearsal will be on Tuesday, March 18 from 5:30 – 7PM at Voorhees High School in the new cafeteria.  (As I had said at the first meeting, if Saturday is not available that week, the rehearsal will be on Tuesday evening.)  We will be going over the parts in “Cinderella” and the show in general.  Please leave a message on the message line (735-8004) if your child is sick or unable to attend.  (Again, please do not have your child attend if he/she is ill!)

If you have any questions or problems, feel free to e-mail me at skitdirector@comcast.net, but give me a few days to reply.

                                                                                                 Sincerely,

                                                                                                  Carolyn B. Newman

P.S.

When parking at Voorhees or in Church of the Holy Spirit, please park in the parking lot and not along side the building.  These rules come from Voorhees and the Church, both of which are generous in providing us rehearsal space. We must follow their requests.  In SKIT, we do expect everyone to follow the rules and procedures asked of you.  Thank you for your cooperation.
